It was like any other Tuesday\u2014work, unwashed dishes, our neighbor\u2019s kid strangling scales on his trumpet\u2014but I noticed the knot in Gemma\u2019s gaze as we unpacked groceries. When I asked her what was wrong, she put the ice cream down and took my hands as though they were wounded animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My pulse surged through my neck; whatever had happened, it was big.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEverything\u2019s okay,\u201d she said. Then she sat me down, and explained, and nothing was okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I turn over this memory often. Us sitting on the bed, the blat of trumpet in the background, the forgotten ice cream oozing into vanilla soup. I smear love over every detail, hoping it\u2019ll hide my hardening belief that it was cruel, or at least foolish, of Gemma to tell me about the parallel world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRemember the physics experiment I participated in a couple months back?\u201d she started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSure,\u201d I said. \u201cThe Many Worlds stuff.\u201d Gemma worked at the university as a career counsellor, and one of her hobbies was taking part in studies. It was usually psych or social science, so she was tickled to see that a physics researcher was looking for human test subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She squeezed my fingers. \u201cSomething happened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She went over the theory\u2014how reality branches into alternate universes, how there are endless variations based on the results of quantum events\u2014holding up a finger when I nodded along impatiently. She wasn\u2019t allowed to tell me the specifics of the experiment, except that they were trying to access those alternate universes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She\u2019d thought nothing had happened at first. But over the course of a few weeks, she\u2019d developed an awareness of a parallel reality, another Gemma, G2. \u201cIt was gentle,\u201d she said. \u201cLike a light fading on.\u201d The other reality wasn\u2019t wildly different from this one\u2014Earth wasn\u2019t ruled by evil space squids, or anything\u2014but G2\u2019s life had diverged from hers at some point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLike what, what\u2019s different?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLots of things.\u201d She looked away. \u201cI\u2019m married to someone else, for one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My insides went cold. Our marriage wasn\u2019t in trouble, exactly, but I\u2019d been worried lately that our comfortable midlife plateau was allowing us to wander away from each other. \u201cAre you\u2026 happier there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her eyes went wide and she pulled me into a hug. \u201cDon\u2019t ever think that, Dylan,\u201d she murmured. \u201cI\u2019m happy here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which, I realized later, wasn\u2019t a complete answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My questions spanned into the weeks and months beyond her revelation, but on the first night, she focused on explaining how she experienced G2\u2019s reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThink of your left foot,\u201d she said. I crunched my toes in. \u201cYou weren\u2019t thinking of it until I mentioned it, right?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI guess not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was just there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s like that. She\u2019s just there. Living her life. I don\u2019t really notice unless I specifically pay attention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo, if you were to pay attention right now, what\u2019s she doing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without blinking, Gemma said, \u201cPutting her daughter to bed. Different time zone, it\u2019s almost nine there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDaughter? She has children?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell, Marwa\u2019s his child, technically.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHis?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She shook her head. \u201cIt\u2019s not important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCan you control her? Like, wiggle her toes, say?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her brow pinched. \u201cIt\u2019s not a perfect analogy.\u201d Then she stood abruptly. \u201cDylan\u2014the ice cream!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gemma reassured me that this new ability of hers changed nothing about us. It was just an awareness; she and G2 couldn\u2019t affect each other in any real way. She was casual about the whole thing, as though she had come home from the experiment with a new coat instead of an entire parallel life. But the connection between the two universes was stronger than I was comfortable with. Like the day she came home with this feathery short haircut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cG2 tried it, and loves having short hair,\u201d she said. \u201cFigured I\u2019d give it a go. What do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I kissed her in answer, messing up the stylist\u2019s hard work. The haircut was great. Except\u2026 I didn\u2019t like G2 leaking into my reality. G2 who loved someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hate that I\u2019m like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We tried tracing the path of divergence, but it was some decision so innocuous that Gemma couldn\u2019t pinpoint it. Sometime in university was the best she could come up with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo, did G2 take that third-year anth seminar?\u201d I asked. The class where we\u2019d met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She nodded faintly and reached forward to turn up the volume on the show we were watching. I paused it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWait, Gemma. What happened?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She puffed out a breath. \u201cWe never dated, okay?\u201d she said. \u201cG2 and you hardly talked. I don\u2019t know why.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWere you already involved with what\u2019s-his-name?\u201d Gemma refused to name her alternate reality husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, we met years later.\u201d She clicked the show back on with a sharp look. I took the hint, and settled into her warmth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve been having nightmares every night for the past three months. Nothing flashy, just Gemma leaving in pursuit of G2\u2019s life, here in our reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m sitting up in bed, startled awake again. Gemma rolls to consciousness beside me. \u201cHey, what\u2019s wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGemma.\u201d I find her hands and massage the slopes of her heart lines with my thumbs. She waits. \u201cYou\u2019ve said there are millions of branching realities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMore like gazillions, if we want to be technical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo you think\u2026 maybe there\u2019s a reality out there, where everything happened the same, even the whole experiment, except \u2026 in that reality, you never told me about G2?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gemma goes still.
