Then she stuffed the crumpled paper back into her pocket. Glancing at the clock, she lifted herself from her desk and moved toward the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing what to make for dinner had become difficult since The Rip. She never knew what version of her husband would come home. Twice now, her husband had been her wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A rip in the fibers of reality<\/em>, news outlets had called it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Cue the doomsdayers<\/em>, Aaron had joked while knocking back whiskey and pacing in front of the television as a news anchor began discussing the story of a man\u2019s late husband coming home as if he had simply popped out for coffee and not been dead for two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than prompting the end-times prophets, The Rip inspired arguments over the mere concept of reality. Scientists called this significant. Irreversible. A fascinating\u2014<em>concerning<\/em>\u2014shift in the universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philosophers called it an existential disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, Lea and Aaron relished the novelty. Discussed the appeal of meeting themselves. The allure of courting each other\u2019s doppelgangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A chance to experiment freely<\/em>, Aaron told her.&nbsp;<em>Without the complications that come with cheating or forming emotional connections with other people.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, they considered the other versions of themselves that began to manifest no different. The first few they met felt like clones. Copies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, they only knew of&nbsp;<em>The<\/em>&nbsp;Rip. In Grandview Park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, more rips appeared.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other cities. Towns. Prairies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smaller ones too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harder to detect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To navigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, they could find their way back to their own apartment in their own version of reality. When they did, they would tell each other everything\u2014<em>the other you spent a semester abroad&nbsp;<\/em>or&nbsp;<em>you love snowboarding&nbsp;<\/em>or&nbsp;<em>you make an amazing beef wellington even though you, here, are vegetarian&nbsp;<\/em>or&nbsp;<em>have you ever thought about the peace corps, because the you there is<\/em>\u2014and they would find themselves overwhelmed with passion for each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, the differences between themselves and themselves were miniscule. As if one small, seemingly insignificant choice set them all on a slightly different course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the rips began to multiply, though, the differences between their realities and their other selves mounted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The you there lost her mother.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>That you didn\u2019t get a doctorate. He started working right after high school.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Did you know you\u2019re an actor? Don\u2019t you have nightmares about being up on stage?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You went to prison. Five more years to go, but you\u2019re up for parole.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the rips started to feel infinite, they began to have trouble finding their way home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I couldn\u2019t find the right path back<\/em>, Aaron told her after a two-week absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I stepped into another reality by accident yesterday. Didn\u2019t even notice until I found a vacant lot where our apartment building should be<\/em>. Lea had gone out to buy groceries. Came back emptyhanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I think the world I visited last month is gone. Or\u2026the rip moved?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, wanderlust snuffed out of her, Lea tried to halt their experiments. Tried to stop the world-walking. Began to work from home. Refused to venture out of the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She couldn\u2019t risk stepping out her door and into a post-apocalyptic version of their world. One she might not escape from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Isn\u2019t&nbsp;<\/em>this<em>&nbsp;world post-apocalyptic?&nbsp;<\/em>Aaron asked.&nbsp;<em>Aren\u2019t they all?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So Aaron still left while Lea stayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And she never knew who might come home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When she heard the key rattling against the door as she stirred more butter into the mushroom risotto she had settled on making, she lifted her spatula and waited for the click of the lock and the rustling of Aaron taking off his shoes before calling out.&nbsp;<em>Who are you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I\u2019m me.&nbsp;<\/em>The pause lingered.&nbsp;<em>But not to you, I guess.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a sigh, she stared down at the glistening rice in the pan and continued stirring.&nbsp;<em>Safe to say that reality is still collapsing around us then?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aaron entered the kitchen and she glanced up at him, assessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unnaturally hunched. Pale face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disconcerting smirk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Honey, you either act like it\u2019s the end of the universe or you just live your life.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shadowed eyes. Sloppy scruff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You have to admit: it\u2019s hard to live your life when there are other&nbsp;<\/em>yous<em>&nbsp;wandering around. Reality is falling apart<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He walked toward her and slipped an arm around her waist, fingers rougher than she was used to. Not like the other Aarons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Always was.&nbsp;<\/em>His shadow eclipsed her as he whispered in her ear.&nbsp;<em>Relax. Enjoy the ride.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She set the spatula on the counter and tilted her head toward him. Tried to ignore her growing alarm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because he was&nbsp;<em>still&nbsp;<\/em>Aaron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just also\u2026not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But\u2026 Like, I&nbsp;<\/em>kind of<em>&nbsp;know you. Intimately even. Because I\u2019ve always known you. But I also&nbsp;<\/em>don\u2019t<em>&nbsp;know you at all, because I\u2019ve&nbsp;<\/em>never<em>&nbsp;known you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her chest tightened. Willed her to stop. But these incessant thoughts began to bubble over.&nbsp;<em>And even though you are you, you are also not you, because you\u2019re not&nbsp;<\/em>my&nbsp;<em>you. It\u2019s just become so complicated. It\u2019s hard to keep track of me and you and the other yous and the other mes and the you that I\u2019ve known and loved for ten years.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aaron\u2019s hands gripped her hips, his breath now hot against her neck. She pushed past the rising unease and continued.&nbsp;<em>And, I\u2019m just\u2026I\u2019m tired of knowing you and not knowing you at the same time. Of you being you and&nbsp;<\/em>not<em>&nbsp;being you at the same time. I just want things to be normal again.
