{"id":1229,"date":"2024-01-10T07:03:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T07:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/quantum.closelycoded.site\/?p=1229"},"modified":"2024-12-18T01:34:37","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T01:34:37","slug":"entanglement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/events.cqt.sg\/shorts\/entry\/entanglement\/","title":{"rendered":"Entanglement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"submit-data\">Submitted by <strong>Kathryn Aldridge-Morris<\/strong><br>on January 02, 2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>** QUANTUM SHORTS 2023\/2024: SHORTLISTED<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">><a href=\"\/backstory-entanglement\">> Read an interview with the author<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Entanglement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a week my eighteen-year-old daughter will have left home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Tell me about quantum physics,\u2019 I say, and tumble onto her beanbag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She swivels from her screen. \u2018Really?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is what she\u2019s going to be spending her days researching, writing, talking about and I know absolutely nothing about any of it. Will this unknowable part of her expand to the point we\u2019re strangers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018It\u2019s the physics of quanta,\u2019 she says, wriggling her toes in her rainbow socks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Right. The physics of quanta. So. What\u2019s quanta?\u2019 I ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018What\u2019s quanta?\u2019 She inhales. \u2018Small things.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Okay.\u2019 Outside a mizzle so fine you wouldn\u2019t know it\u2019s there but for my drenched neighbour pulling towels from her rotary line. \u2018Then what\u2019s the&nbsp;<em>physics&nbsp;<\/em>of small things?\u2019 I recall my daughter\u2019s fingers as a baby, so tiny they were, impatient to lift flaps in books, always curious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018How small things interact with each other. Not small things like children. Like electrons.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That tiny hand in mine or pushing strawberries into her mouth \u2013 her tongue figuring out the seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018And what are electrons?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018What are&nbsp;<em>electrons<\/em>?\u2019 She rolls her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will her vowels lengthen down south? I stretch my legs and inhale. Will a new voice speak her mother tongue?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Electrons are the smallest leptons,\u2019 she says. Then, \u2018You\u2019re going to ask me what leptons are, aren\u2019t you?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I nod. \u2018Particles that don\u2019t interact via the strong nuclear force,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The neighbour has disappeared and the rotary line spins in the wind. My daughter would happily sit with equations for hours, figuring out forces and the speed of the line in the wind. Me? I\u2019d be looking up Scandinavian words for \u2018wind\u2019, searching for the right phrase that captures its ability to knock you off your feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Strong nuclear force,\u2019 I repeat. I don\u2019t even know how to come back with a question. Since when did she get&nbsp;<em>this<\/em>&nbsp;smart? A tornado of knowledge. As a kid, she never wanted the talking to stop at night. We\u2019d read together on this very beanbag and then it was question after question after question. Ten! I used to tell her. I\u2019m counting to ten and you\u2019d better be up and in bed. Then one day she told me she figured nothing happened after ten. She was going to try it out. She stayed until I counted to ten, then ten point one, ten point two, ten point three her grin widening as her hypothesis was proven right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She walks me through hadrons and protons with a patience I never knew she had but I guess we know less and less about the inner workings of our kids as they grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018\u2026when photons with sufficient energy are incident on the surface of a metal,\u2019 she\u2019s saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Why do we need to know this stuff?\u2019 I ask. She pushes her hair behind her ears. Is that another new piercing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Just learning a bit about the universe, Mum. You know, not living in ignorance. Like why do we know about gravity? Even though we don\u2019t&nbsp;<em>actually<\/em>&nbsp;know about gravity. It\u2019s the fundamental force we know least about.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How lightly she holds the unknown. I hate dealing with the unknowable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She flicks through a pile of index cards from her summer revision. I remember hugging her the night before her final exam as she sobbed physics was just too hard. It wasn\u2019t for people like her. \u2018Nobody said this was going to be easy,\u2019 I\u2019d said, stroking her hair, adrift with my failure to help. Not having any of the answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Okay, so with the metal thing, you\u2019re saying light is made up of stuff.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Mum, this isn\u2019t even quantum physics. The duality of wave particles is. But. Superposition! Maybe you can get behind this more easily?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She\u2019s right. I can feel the heat of a metaphor excite in my chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018You can be in two states at the same time.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I look at her posters of Green Day, The Smiths, the Periodic table, the stuffed toys, books, the backpack she\u2019s already started to fill. It\u2019s not even a week. Only six days from now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Like happy-sad?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Mum. We\u2019re talking about particles not people.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I watch her plait a strand of her fringe and let it flop onto her face. \u2018Look, if I were a particle, I could be here and I could be there.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018You know about drink spiking, right?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018I\u2019m going to be fine.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018In the story I\u2019m working on, I could have my fictional mother telling the fictional daughter who\u2019s moved away, how she wishes they were particles, not people.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018That fictional mother in your story,\u2019 she says, tipping her flashcards into the bin. \u2018That mother?\u2019 She leans across and gives me a bear hug. \u2018She just needs to calm down a bit.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1\" style=\"color:#df6523\">About the Author:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kathryn Aldridge-Morris is a writer from Bristol, UK, whose fiction and creative nonfiction has appeared in a variety of literary journals and anthologies.
