Take Ana, for example. She was convinced that every time she looked under her bed, the Universe split in two. In a parallel world in which a mirror Ana also looked under her bed before going to sleep and after saying her prayers and where, up until then, she\u2019d never found anything bad, this time there would be a ghastly demon with wicked teeth and blood-stained claws, whose only desire was to catch and tear apart Ana, aged six and three quarter years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; Little wonder she said her prayers before she looked. Little wonder she had nightmares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; I told her that wasn\u2019t the way the multiverse theory worked. That for every Ana that found a slavering beast, there was one that found a toy she\u2019d lost, or one that forgot to look under the bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; She skewered me with her most outraged look. This Ana never forgot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; But it\u2019s hard arguing theoretical physics with a child yet to turn seven and, as I wasn\u2019t prepared to deny the theory outright, it was clear this notion was not going to be an easy one to shift. It wasn\u2019t simply that she had a binary, yes versus no, either-or view of the coin toss that happened in her imagination every time she lifted the skirt that kept under-the-bed out-of-sight. It was because what terrified her, wasn\u2019t the finding a monster under her bed, it was the not finding a monster under her bed. In her head, every time she survived, she doomed the parallel Universe Ana to a grisly death. It was the guilt that was crushing her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cWhy don\u2019t you not look?\u201d I reasoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cI have to,\u201d she replied with an air of ancient sorrow. \u201cThere might be a monster under the bed. I have to check. And even if I don\u2019t, the other Ana will.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; This had me scratching my head, figuratively speaking. I\u2019m a psychologist by trade, not a physicist. Wouldn\u2019t that require the Universe to have already split? And, once the other Ana looked, it would be her Universe that split again, not this Ana\u2019s. Maybe this was something I could use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; I thought of her parents. Reading between the lines, not a tricky task with those two, they wanted me to crush Ana\u2019s creativity. To make her as easy to handle as she had been twelve months earlier. To make her \u2018normal\u2019. But normal wasn\u2019t an option; it was clear this precocious child had the potential to far exceed the pretensions of her middle class parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cAna,\u201d I said, \u201cWho looks first? You, or the other Ana?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; She suspected a trick and trod carefully. \u201cWe both&#8230;\u201d then she corrected herself. \u201cThere is no other Ana, not until I look. Or there is, but it\u2019s me and we haven\u2019t split yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cIf she is you, will she react to finding the monster the same way you would?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; She sucked air through the gap in her front teeth. \u201cI guess.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cAnd how would you react, if, when you looked under the bed, you found a monster there? What would you do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cI&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; I waited. The silence stretched between us. This was somewhere she hadn\u2019t been before. \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d she said quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cBut you\u2019d do something? You wouldn\u2019t just sit there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cNo,\u201d she agreed. \u201cI\u2019d run&#8230; hide. Scream, maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cI\u2019m sure you would. And what would your parents do, if they heard you scream?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cThey\u2019d come running,\u201d she said, and they would. Any parent would.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; I let her think about this for a moment. \u201cAna, you\u2019re intelligent, resourceful, and brave. And the other Ana, she is exactly the same. She is, after all, you. She &#8211; you &#8211; would not take it lying down. You\u2019d fight, you\u2019d run. Your parents would help. The one thing you would never be, is a victim. Don\u2019t think I haven\u2019t noticed the hobby horse propped up against the toy chest, ready for action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cAnd the roller skates on the landing,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; I wasn\u2019t sure how the roller skates would help. Perhaps she hoped the monster would trip on them. She\u2019d be upset if I told her that her mother wordlessly tidied them up each night. \u201cAnd the skates,\u201d I diplomatically agreed. \u201cIt\u2019s not much, perhaps, but you\u2019re doing the best you can. And so would the other Ana. No monster is going to get a free lunch in this house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; She laughed, a lovely little laugh, made all the more charming by its rarity of use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; I pushed on. \u201cSo it\u2019s not a foregone conclusion that the monster always wins. And if it does not-\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201c-Then there are two Anas!\u201d she interrupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; This wasn\u2019t quite where I\u2019d been going. I wanted her to acknowledge that she wasn\u2019t responsible for what happened in the other Universes. How could she be? But sometimes, usually in fact, you had to let your patient find their own path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cAnd then four, and then eight, and then&#8230;\u201d she babbled on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; A small chime rang out on my wristwatch. \u201cOkay Ana. I think we\u2019ve made good progress. We\u2019ll leave it there for today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; A muffled voice came through the door. \u201cAna? Honey? Who are you talking to in there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; Ana called back, \u201cNo one, mummy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; Which was an illuminating denial. I jotted it down for future discussion, curious to see if Ana\u2019s mother would come into the bedroom. \u201cOkay sweetie,\u201d she caved in, as I suspected she would. \u201cBut go to sleep now, you hear?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; Ana waited until the footsteps faded away down the hall. \u201cGoodnight, Doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; \u201cGoodnight, Ana,\u201d I replied, \u201csleep tight.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; And then I slid myself back under her bed, listening to her breathing softly slow and waiting for tomorrow night, when she would once again lift the covers, and &#8211; all being well &#8211; discover me lying there, ready for our next session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1\" style=\"color:#df6523\">About the Author<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Liam is a London based writer and host of the award winning monthly literary event, Liars&#8217; League.
