Olivia was using her hands, which was a special thing she got to do when Mom was away. Other special things included Olivia wearing her ballet shoes to the grocery store and me getting in trouble when her arabesque knocked over twenty-seven soup cans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyway, Olivia sashayed over to the door, her fist still full of Froot Loops. I think Mom told us not to answer the door, but I forget about things like that a lot. Besides, when I heard Olivia yelling about how happy she was to see Gran, I knew it was fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then, of course, I realized it wasn\u2019t exactly fine at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHello, darlings,\u201d Gran said, smiling at me as she shuffled into the kitchen. I kind of gagged on my cereal, which I\u2019m sure looked disgusting, but she didn\u2019t have her glasses on anyway. \u201cWhat are you ladies up to?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou were DEAD!\u201d Olivia declared, pas-de-chatting gleefully around Gran. \u201cAnd there was a big old funeral, and we all wore black and cried about you, and Mom got really angry at Uncle James for having it in a church, and I ate six different kinds of cookies!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow nice,\u201d Gran said. She still had the morgue makeup on, so her face looked all weird and smooth, like she was a mime. The more she talked, the more it cracked. \u201cWhere\u2019s your mother?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow did you \u2013 what?\u201d I managed to choke out. \u201cBut \u00ad\u2013 wha \u2013 we buried you really deep \u2013\u201d I faltered, realizing how that sounded. Hi, Gran, great to see you, we buried you really deep!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gran squinted. \u201cAnn, what are you talking about? Is this an Internet thing?\u201d She shook her head. \u201cI don\u2019t understand half of what kids say nowadays.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLemme take your purse!\u201d Olivia shouted, yanking it from her hands. I hadn\u2019t noticed it before, but now that I looked, there it was. Olivia began to stick her pudgy forearm into its depths to plumb for the usual surprise presents Gran usually brought her, but I shot her a look and she withdrew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow did you get here?\u201d I asked, sweeping Froot Loop crumbs off Olivia\u2019s placemat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gran smiled. \u201cI drove, of course.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I couldn\u2019t remember hearing car noises, but when I glanced out the front window her Chevy was sitting on the driveway, sickeningly lilac as ever. I felt tired all of a sudden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh,\u201d I said. \u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet\u2019s play Candyland!\u201d Olivia yelled, jumping up and down with her feet in second position, Gran\u2019s purse hugged to her chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cActually, honey, I think I\u2019m going to lie down for a bit,\u201d Gran said. My stomach lurched at the phrasing, but Olivia didn\u2019t seem to notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAww,\u201d she muttered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s okay,\u201d I said. \u201cGran needs some rest.\u201d Another stomach lurch. \u201cWhy don\u2019t we let her nap in the guest room, and we can wake her when Mom gets home?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank you, Ann.\u201d Gran smiled again; flakes of her makeup fluttered to the tile floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I followed her down the hallway to see her to her room. The second she closed the door behind her, Olivia started yelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat is it?\u201d I hissed, thumping back into the kitchen. Olivia was standing next to the table and clutching at her face, the purse on the ground in front of her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a cat in there,\u201d she whimpered, backing up against the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA cat?\u201d I bent down and picked up the purse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo!\u201d Olivia whined, plunking down on her bottom and scooting under the table. \u201cNo no no no no!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I looked down. The purse was empty. I stuck my hand in it, rummaged around a little. Still nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d I asked, turning the bag upside down and shaking it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere was a cat,\u201d she said, sticking her thumb in her mouth, which she\u2019s too old to do, but Mom wasn\u2019t home anyway. \u201cA dead cat. I thought there must have been something little in there, because it didn\u2019t make any noise when I shook it, but then I opened it and saw \u2013 the \u2013 saw the \u2013\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her words tapered off into terrified sobbing that might have been fake but probably wasn\u2019t. I shut the purse and looked into it again. Still no cat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOlivia? There\u2019s nothing in here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She frowned, her lower lip jutting out, and snatched the bag from my hands. She closed it, then squeezed her eyes shut, holding her breath with her cheeks puffed up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Olivia flung the purse open, and a cat sprung out. It was a calico, long-furred and slinking, and it yawned and set to licking its leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Olivia screamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t right,\u201d I mumbled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMom\u2019s allergic,\u201d Olivia whispered, holding the purse to her chest. The cat finished cleaning its leg and began work on its large, magnificent tail. My heart was pounding hard enough to make my chest ache and my fingers throb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have to go check on Gran,\u201d I said, leaping up from the floor. I don\u2019t know why I did it, but something told me I had to, and that was what Mom was always telling us: trust our instincts. A cat knows what to do because its brain has been sharpened to a point by thousands of years of evolution. I know what to do because Mom left me instructions, although I don\u2019t know when she\u2019ll be back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guest room was a sealed box at the end of the hall. My back was to the kitchen. In my head, I saw everything layered over everything, Olivia with and without a cat, Mom home and not home, Gran dead and not dead, none of them existing. At the funeral, the pastor had talked about believing in what we couldn\u2019t see. I closed my eyes. I didn\u2019t believe a thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1\" style=\"color:#df6523\">About the Author<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am a seasoned traveller through both space (terrestrial, limited range) and time (standard rate, forward only).
