The 650 entries we received were the most in the competition\u2019s history. Now, we are delighted to present the 10 finalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s been an absolute thrill to read this year\u2019s entries for Quantum Shorts,\u201d said shortlisting judge Charles Woffinden at the University of Queensland and the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS). \u201cThe quality has been extremely high, making the shortlisting process both terribly challenging and extremely enjoyable, but I suppose, \u2018nobody said this was going to be easy!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNobody said this was going to be easy\u201d is the phrase that we asked writers to incorporate in their entries for the competition. The phrase, originally from the last Quantum Shorts flash fiction winning entry \u201cHelping Hands\u201d, found its way into new worlds and plotlines in the hands of this year\u2019s writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Author Michael Brooks noted the great diversity. \u201cThe stories were truly engaging: sometimes touching, sometimes funny, sometimes ingenious, sometimes just hilariously crazy!\u201d he said. \u201cI had great difficulty choosing my favourites, as all of them had something to offer a curious reader.\u201d Meanwhile, Andrew Hanson, Outreach Manager at UK\u2019s National Physical Laboratory, was impressed by the writers\u2019 ability to \u201creframe the weird world of quantum particles within human scale and emotional levels\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shortlisted writers hail from Canada, Pakistan, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States. They have taken inspiration from quantum physics concepts, including the many-worlds interpretation and entanglement, to craft stories about family ties, Father Christmas, and fallible creators in not more than 1000 words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ten shortlisted stories in alphabetical order are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/world-threads\">A World in Threads<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 Acadia Reynolds tells a fantastical tale about red threads of probability, quantum realities and family ties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/clares-prism\">Clare&#8217;s Prism<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 Quantum messages come through from a daughter to her mother in this story by Dave Chua.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/degenerate-sanity\">Degenerate Sanity<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 A quest to reverse an unprecedented consequence of interworld expeditions unfolds in Mahnoor Fatima\u2019s story.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/entanglement\">Entanglement<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 In this story by Kathryn Aldridge-Morris, quantum physics is a topic for connection as a mother deals with her daughter leaving home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/quantum-cake-a-la-solvay\/\">Quantum cake \u00e0 la Solvay<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 Pippa Storey tells a tale in verse and rhyme, of quantum events and people through time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/red-light-blue-light\">Red Light, Blue Light<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 Written by Ioana Burtea, this is a story of entanglement, love and longing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/root-consciousness\">Root Consciousness<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 Tony Tsoi\u2019s flash fiction of a biophysicist\u2019s journey to reconnect with long-lost family.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/santa-claus-and-quantum-librarian\">Santa Claus and the Quantum Librarian<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 In this Christmas story by S.A. McNaughton, a child plans to observe Santa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/observer-1\">The Observer<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 Unobserved photons are leaking from a supposedly observed universe in Dan Goodman\u2019s take on the observer effect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/two-lives-stretched-out-them\">Two Lives Stretched Out Before Them<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 In this story by Janel Comeau, the quantum computer decides if a couple\u2019s relationship ends, or does it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congratulations to the shortlisted authors! They are already rewarded for their efforts. They have won a USD 100 shortlist award and a one-year digital subscription to&nbsp;<em>Scientific American<\/em>. They also win the chance for greater rewards as our judging panel decide the First Prize and Runner Up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can have your say in deciding the final prizes too.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cqt.sg\/shorts\/news\/flash-fiction-shortlist-2023\/\">Voting for the People\u2019s Choice prize<\/a>\u00a0is now open on the Quantum Shorts website and closes at 11:59 PM GMT on 29 March 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since we had so many excellent submissions this year, we would like to give an honorable mention to five more. These stories were favourites of some of the judges but did not quite make the shortlist. They are&nbsp;<a href=\"\/entry\/qubit-superhighway\">Qubit Superhighway<\/a>&nbsp;by Liam Hogan,&nbsp;<a href=\"\/entry\/play-funky-music\">Play That Funky Music<\/a>&nbsp;by Max Gallagher,&nbsp;<a href=\"\/entry\/experiment\">The Experiment<\/a>&nbsp;by Natasha Irving,&nbsp;<a href=\"\/entry\/equestrian-physicist-needed-asap\">Equestrian Physicist Needed ASAP<\/a>&nbsp;by Lily Turaski, and&nbsp;<a href=\"\/entry\/think-your-left-foot\">Think of Your Left Foot<\/a>&nbsp;by Cadence Mandybura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is bittersweet to announce our final shortlist. Since the Centre for Quantum Technologies started Quantum Shorts in 2012, our scientific field has advanced tremendously, but science fiction is always a few steps, worlds or universes ahead.
