From just over 400 stories submitted to the Quantum Shorts flash fiction competition, ten have emerged as finalists. They vie for three top prizes, including one to be decided by public vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021, we asked writers to tease out a story from the many possibilities of the quantum world.&nbsp; Our shortlisting judges were impressed with the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have encountered so many amazingly creative ideas in the stories. It is refreshing to think about quantum mechanical phenomena in new ways,\u201d said shortlisting judge Floor van Riggelen at QuTech, a physicist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entries built intriguing worlds, developed plots and created characters, each time in not more than 1000 words. As an added challenge, writers had to also include the phrase \u201cit\u2019s a lot to think about\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shortlisted stories took inspiration from topics in quantum physics including quantum computing, the many-worlds interpretation and the observer effect, to spin tales about demons, coronaviruses, cats, and terrifying quantum games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some stories tug at the reader\u2019s heartstrings. Author Michael Brooks said, \u201cI was impressed with the way some of these stories immersed me in the characters\u2019 emotions and dilemmas \u2013 the science really brought their humanity to the fore.\u201d Librarian Mindy Tan said, \u201cThe stories that touched me emotionally, despite my lack of background in quantum physics, really pulled me in.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For their efforts, authors of the shortlisted stories have won a USD 100 shortlist award and a one-year digital subscription to\u00a0<em>Scientific American<\/em>. They could also win more prizes as our judging panel decide the First Prize and Runner Up and\u00a0<a href=\"\/vote\">a public vote<\/a>\u00a0settles the People\u2019s Choice Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ten shortlisted stories are, in alphabetical order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/tale-two-viruses\">A Tale of Two Viruses<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Written by Connie Chen, in an eerily familiar world, Evan\u2019s search for a coronavirus vaccine has unintended consequences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/world-apart\">A World Apart<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Colm O\u2019Shea explores the thought processes of a quantum processor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/better-faster-stronger-lonelier\">Better, Faster, Stronger, Lonelier<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 The classical-quantum debate is reframed in chat messages between a classical computer and a quantum computer by \u00c1lvaro Buend\u00eda.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/demons-hunt-darkness\">Demons Hunt in Darkness<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 S.G. Phillips tells a fantastical story about a demon-haunted world and a girl\u2019s quest for a new way to live.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/helping-hands\">Helping Hands<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Cora Valderas\u2019s story is a spooky warning to always be careful when handling quantum machinery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/lost-and-found\">Lost and Found<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Ana mysteriously finds children\u2019s socks on her bed after moving into her new home in this story by Giancarla Aritao.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/possible-cats\">Possible Cats<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Michael Haiden confronts the issues that arrive with a dangerous and expensive new technology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/powers-observation\">Powers of Observation<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 With a speculative eye on the future, Charmaine Smith creates a powerful job that carries a cost.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/quantum-et-circenses\">Quantum et Circenses<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 In this tale by Sabrina Patsch, participants in a race about strategy, courage and luck also have to contend with quantum effects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/quantum-luck\">Quantum Luck<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Through the adventures of Captain Brinks, Brian Wells tells a story about quantum tunnelling, with a twist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congratulations to the finalists!
