We are thrilled to announce the shortlisted entries from the hundreds of stories that came from writers all around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quantum short stories are no longer than 1000 words and contain the phrase \u201cthings used to be so simple\u201d. The shortlist contains ten stories, chosen from 647 total submissions \u2013 an unprecedented number of entries. Our appreciation goes out to all the writers who participated so enthusiastically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0<a href=\"\/shortlisting\">shortlisting judges<\/a>, drawn from the competition\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"\/scientific-partner\">scientific partners<\/a>, had high praise for the stories this year. John Donohue at the Institute for Quantum Computing in Waterloo, Canada, found them \u201coccasionally terrifying, occasionally beautiful, and always evocative\u201d, while Georgia Mortzou at the UK Quantum Communications Hub found \u201cthe standard very high, the concepts original\u201d. Spiros Michalakis, a quantum physicist and outreach manager at the Institute for Quantum Information and Matter at Caltech called the stories \u201cfantastic\u201d and \u201cscientifically nuanced\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ten shortlisted stories are, in alphabetical order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/tunnelsx\">(Tunnels)x<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 In this intriguing tale by Gunnar De Winter, quantum tunnelling might help us escape our ultimate fate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/collateral-damage\">Collateral Damage<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Simulations of war take a more terrifying turn in Lewis Freer\u2019s story about unintended consequences of technology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/connection-lost\">Connection Lost<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Anjelica Grey explores the complexities of love and loss in her take on many-worlds and quantum entanglement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/does-particle-collider-have-heart\">Does a Particle Collider Have a Heart?<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 This is a tale of how that which we care for might come to care for us by Emma Marcos.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/entangled-servitude\">Entangled Servitude<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Tom Middlebrook\u2019s story is a witty take on quantum entanglement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/entanglement-8\">Entanglement<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 In this love story by Annie Tupek, matchmaking gets a quantum spin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/fine-print\">Fine Print<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 C R Long&#8217;s short story about alternate dimensions magnifies the importance of reading the small print in your contract.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/shinichis-tricycle\">Shinichi\u2019s Tricycle<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Ariadne Blayde subtly pulls disparate characters together in a story of possibilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/special-exhibition\">Special Exhibition<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Step into history with an exhibition on a quantum-inspired interstellar pandemic, curated by Griffin Ayaz Tyree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/entry\/collapse-0\">The Collapse<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Meg Sipos has an edgy take on alternate realities and multiple selves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congratulations to the shortlisted writers! They have won a USD $100 shortlist award and a one-year digital subscription to&nbsp;<em>Scientific American<\/em>&nbsp;\u2013 as well as the chance to win even more awards as their stories head into the final judging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have a favourite story? You can help one of the shortlisted authors get more reward for their stories. We invite you to take part and pick your favourite short story for the People\u2019s Choice Prize.\u00a0<a href=\"\/vote\">Voting is open<\/a>\u00a0from now till 11:59 PM GMT on Monday, 18 May 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might find picking your favourite a difficult task. The shortlisting panel certainly did. Tara Roberson at the&nbsp;Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems said, \u201cI was delighted with the entries for Quantum Shorts this year. It seems as though the calibre of stories is continuing to improve and it was a challenge to shortlist my favourite entries from the stories submitted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We would also like to give an honourable mention to five stories. These stories were among the favourites of some of the judges but did not make the shortlist. They are\u00a0A Quantum Tale\u00a0by Jerome Edward Malenfant;\u00a0<a href=\"\/entry\/entangled-5\">Entangled<\/a>\u00a0by Medardo M Manrique Jr;\u00a0<a href=\"\/entry\/external-memo-spti672\">External Memo SPTI672<\/a>\u00a0by Krati Shukla;\u00a0<a href=\"\/entry\/it-takes-two-entangle\">It takes two to entangle<\/a>\u00a0by D. A. Qui\u00f1ones and The Mysteries of Quantum Mechanics\u2019 Charges by Lee Paul Melling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ll give the final word about the stories this year to Andrew Hanson at the UK&#8217;s National Physical Laboratory (NPL): \u201cThey were a very welcome escape from a world that has suddenly become very sci-fi. It was warming how the authors used abstract, odd, perhaps even obscure building blocks to make something beautiful, coherent, witty and relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We thank all authors for their participation and wish the shortlisted authors all the best as their stories head into the final judging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">* Due to the Covid-19 situation, the shortlist was compiled without the input of David Hutchinson of the Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies.
