Besides designing the book\u2019s cover, Syafiqah also prepared the layout you see in the PDF version of the e-book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We spoke to Syafiqah about designing for the Quantum Shorts e-book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What do you hope for people to feel when they see the cover?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To not be afraid upon seeing the words \u201cquantum physics\u201d. You will definitely not find the textbook kind of stuff in the book. The stories in here have wonderful pacing, tones and perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Please tell us about yourself and your design style.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m someone who values symbols, metaphors and hidden meanings. I\u2019m also interested in giving voices to universal human emotions in order to touch people on a profound level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who are your favourite designers or what are your favourite works?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hmmm, would it be weird to say that I don\u2019t have any? I really do look up to and enjoy everyone\u2019s works. I\u2019ll spend countless hours going through sites such as itsnicethat.com, behance or just design studios and illustrators that I follow on Instagram. I feel like there\u2019s so much that you can learn and take inspiration from people who enjoy doing the same things as you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why did this project appeal to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have always found quantum physics to be intimidating having only done physics back in secondary school. My only encounters with quantum physics were through films like&nbsp;<em>Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse<\/em>! Reading these short stories has definitely helped me improve my understanding of quantum physics through the imagination and words of these writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To find the perfect balance when it comes to combining elements of visualisation from both parts of the book\u2014the fiction and the science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The very first conceptualisations of the Quantum Shorts book cover. Syafiqah\u2019s idea is to take elements from each short story and combine them all in one place. This is to create a fiction world of the book.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What inspired your cover design and what kind of research did you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usually for book cover designs, I find it really important for designers to read the actual content and not just settle for the synopsis at the back. You get a better understanding of what you\u2019re designing for. Then I\u2019d look up different designers\/artists\/illustrators for inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"174\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/quantum.closelycoded.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/download-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1793\" style=\"width:203px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"174\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/quantum.closelycoded.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/download.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1794\" style=\"width:203px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Syafiqah used a clean, simple and modern font to give the book a scientific feel. Each story has its own title page and story titles are placed on top as useful signposts in the anthology.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Give us a little insight behind the art of choosing fonts and deciding how a book should be laid out.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general, you\u2019ll want the typefaces you choose to match the overall feel, essence, context and intention of the book. Readability also plays a part when it comes to designing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For&nbsp;<em>Quantum Shorts<\/em>, I used the Agne and Caslon fonts. Both are similar; they look and function well in many different settings. They are modern yet have a timeless quality which makes the designs elegant and classic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Did you have a favourite story from the collection?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I really enjoyed \u201c<a href=\"\/entry\/there-was-sun\">There Was A Sun<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"\/entry\/ana\">Ana<\/a>\u201d. Syafiqah was inspired by the essence of retro-futuristic surrealism she got from the stories in the book.
