For the filmmakers, the wait is over: the judges have deliberated on how to award our top prizes and over 1,000 of you have voted to decide the People\u2019s Choice prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was impressed by the wide range of approaches taken by the participants,\u201d said judge Professor Brian Greene, author, physicist at Columbia University, New York, and co-founder of the World Science Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alex Winter, filmmaker and writer &nbsp;\u2013 and another of the judges \u2013 said, \u201cIt was great to see so many varied approaches to quantum, in terms of narrative form, cinematic style and humor. All of the shorts had a lot to offer!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After collating the inputs from the\u00a0<a href=\"\/judging\">six final judges<\/a>, we are proud to award the top prize to\u00a0<em>Novae<\/em>. Its creator, Thomas Vanz, is a filmmaker based in Paris.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Novae&nbsp;<\/em>shows what happens when a giant star explodes, moving through the phase of \u201csupernova\u201d to the formation of a black hole. Understanding these processes is widely considered essential to creating a much-needed theory of \u201cquantum gravity\u201d that fills in the blanks left by relativity and quantum physics. In an interview for Quantum Shorts, Vanz said: \u201cIt is one of the most comprehensive events of the universe.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remarkably, Vanz created the film using shots of ink in an aquarium set up in his garage. Judge Honor Harger, Executive Director at the ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, praised this film\u2019s \u201cravishing visuals and stunning sound.\u201d&nbsp;<em>Novae<\/em>, she said, \u201ccreates the feeling of moving inside a star and experiencing matter from within.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1\" style=\"color:#df6523\">FIRST PRIZE<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Novae&nbsp;<\/em>by Thomas Vanz<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"NOVAE - An aesthetic vision of a supernova\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/189562895?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&nbsp;Also watch:&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/185305778\">NOVAE &#8211; Making of &amp; Breakdowns part I<\/a><strong>and&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/189317755\">NOVAE &#8211; Making of &amp; breakdowns part II<\/a>,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo experience the feeling of winning a festival for the first time, it\u2019s kind of breathtaking. I really didn&#8217;t know when I made this movie in my garden&#8217;s hut that it could go so far,&#8221; said Vanz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second prize-winning film is&nbsp;<em>The Guardian<\/em>, by Dr Chetan V. Kotabage, Assistant Professor in Physics at the KLS Gogte Institute of Technology in Karnataka, India. This film is both the judges\u2019 Runner Up and the People\u2019s Choice prize-winner.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Guardian<\/em>&nbsp;tells of a love triangle between young people &#8211; electron, wave and particle \u2013 and its dramatic consequences. The film\u2019s narrative and staging bring to life some of the central concepts of quantum physics. \u201cI love that it is looking at quantum physics through a cultural lens,\u201d said Eliene Augenbraun, Multimedia Managing Editor for Nature Research Group, who chose this film as her favourite.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2\" style=\"color:#df6523\">PEOPLE&#8217;S CHOICE &amp; RUNNER UP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Guardian&nbsp;<\/em>by Dr Chetan V. Kotabage<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/UXm2ofYgQco\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The diversity of the Quantum Shorts finalists and the wide perspective of our expert judges \u2013 coming from the fields of physics, film and art \u2013 meant that competition for the prizes was fierce. Other films that earn honourable mention for being first choice on at least one judge\u2019s list are&nbsp;<em>Approaching Reality<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Together \u2013 Parallel Universe<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>Bolero<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The judges noted the high standard of entries overall. \u201cI was really impressed by the quality of the filmmaking and the ideas,\u201d says Charlotte Stoddart,&nbsp;<em>Nature<\/em>\u2019s Chief Multimedia Editor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Quantum Shorts festival is organised by the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore. &#8220;We run the Quantum Shorts film festival to share the creativity and big ideas of quantum physics through the creativity and vision of filmmakers,\u201d says Artur Ekert, the Centre\u2019s Director. \u201cThe filmmakers who participated, along with the festival&#8217;s media partners, scientific partners and screening partners, have helped us inspire audiences around the world, and we\u2019re hugely grateful for their efforts.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quantum Shorts will return later this year. Continuing its alternation between short films and flash fiction, the call this year will be for short stories.
