We thank all the filmmakers who entered for making our job of choosing just ten so tough!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the finalists are dramatic, some funny, some abstract. Some are live-action film, some animation. Each is under five minutes long. But don&#8217;t just take our word for it, go watch them. Here&#8217;s the trailer. We list the titles and our synopses below &#8211; follow the links there to the full films.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Announcing the Quantum Shorts finalists 2016-17\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/204128138?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Live screenings of the films start February 23 with confirmed events in Waterloo (23 February) and Vancouver (23 February), Canada; Singapore (25-28 February); Glasgow, UK (17 March); and Brisbane, Australia (24 March). \u00a0<a href=\"\/events\">Check this page for more details and links to register<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For making the shortlist, the filmmakers receive a $250 award, a one-year digital subscription to&nbsp;<em>Scientific American<\/em>&nbsp;and certificates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The festival\u2019s top prize of US $1500 and runner-up prize of US $1000 will now be decided by a panel of eminent judges. The additional People\u2019s Choice prize of $500 will be decided by public vote on the shortlist,\u00a0<a href=\"\/vote\">with voting open here until 26 March<\/a>.
